A.E. & C.E. Tilton firm, New York records, 1846-1874.

Contains correspondence (letterpress copybooks) and accounts of Alfred E. and Charles E. Tilton as dealers in wine and spirits; as Tilton & Molony (real estate brokers as well); as Tilton & McFarland, dealers in safes. Chiefly with Ladd & Tilton, Portland, Ore. Accounts for shipments to California, 1849-1863, contain a record of shipments on various ships, including the Flying Cloud and other clippers, with number of days for voyage; and invoices to James Patrick & Co., San Francisco. Letterbooks and accounts for Ladd & Tilton include gold and currency accounts and semi-personal letters from C.E. Tilton to William S. Ladd. A record of Tilton & McFarland's losses to Confederate privateers included.

William Sargent Ladd was born in Holland, Vermont in 1826. He arrived in Portland, Oregon in 1851 and took a job as a clerk in a mercantile store (which he later purchased). In 1854, after serving one term on the city council, Ladd was elected mayor of Portland. With his business partner Charles E. Tilton, Ladd later established the first bank in Oregon (1859), the Ladd & Tilton Bank.
